Reconciliation

When I began my Certificate in Reconciliation Studies, I was truly excited to learn the things that I hadn’t learned, learn the things that had been hidden, and understand different perspectives and ways of knowing. I wanted to change my understanding and outlook as an individual which would necessarily change my outlook as an educator as well. I wanted to make meaningful personal changes and strides toward realizing reconciliation.
After completing six classes through First Nations University of Canada, I’m overwhelmed with what I have learned. I have had the opportunity to learn with and from Indigenous professors and students. I also had the opportunity to participant in additional activities where I was able to speak with and learn from Elders. This was an unbelievable opportunity. I was truly sad when it came time to apply to graduate and leave the program. This won’t be the end of my learning, or of me talking about what a wonderful program this is.
My convocation was in October 2023. Sadly, I wasn’t able to attend the two separate ceremonies, one at the University of Regina and the other at First Nations University of Canada. When I received the parchment in the mail, I felt proud, but this didn’t feel like a good way to commemorate my learning. Then, to my surprise First Nations University of Canada reached out to verify my mailing address for a ‘scroll.’ I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Then, it arrived in an unassuming business sized paper envelope... a leather scroll laser printed onto the softest piece of animal hide. The feel, the smell, the beauty of it were simply the most amazing. I feel honoured to receive such a special item that I will treasure forever. I’m still figuring out how to frame it, but I mean to hang prominently as a reminder that we have far to go yet. This is one small step in my ongoing personal journey.
